A few facts
 
  • He was born on March 11, 1926 in Alabama.
  • He was the 10th child born (out of 12) in his family.
  • Received a masters in Sociology at Atlanta University.
  • In 1948, he became an ordained Baptist mister.
  • Became friends and mentored Martin Luther King Jr. in 1954.  
  • He and Martin Luther King Jr. organized protests against bus segregation after Rosa Parks was arrested.
  •  In 1957, he and Dr. King founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
  • In 1989 his autobiography was published. It was titled And the Walls Came Tumbling Down.
  • Dr. Abernathy died April 17, 1990 at the age of 64. (due to poor health)
  • A lot of people say if it weren't for Dr. Abernathy there might not have been a Dr. King.
